Dickens Book Discussion Series

The library will celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Charles Dickens in 2012 with a book discussion series featuring his works. Discussions will be free and open to the public, and copies of the books will be available to borrow from the library in advance. We will discuss:

The Pickwick Papers on Monday, January 16;
David Copperfield on Monday, February 20;
Bleak House on Monday, March 19; and
Great Expectations on Monday, April 16.

Born February 7, 1812, Charles Dickens was one of the most famous and popular writers of the Victorian era. His first novel, The Pickwick Papers, became a popular phenomenon while still being published as a monthly serial, firmly establishing his career as an author. He would go on to write some of the best-known novels in English literature, including those mentioned above as well as such works as Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, and A Christmas Carol. His books are characterized by colorful characters, elegant prose, complex plots, and engagement with social issues.

The bicentennial of his birth is an opportunity to reflect on Dickens's lasting contribution to English literature and his continued popularity with readers after two hundred years. It will be marked by events, exhibits, and readings around the country, including the release of a new movie version of Great Expectations with Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Abel Magwiitch.

Join us on Saturday, December 10 for a refreshing break from the holiday bustle. The library will sponsor a Books & Music Holiday Dessert Tea, generously hosted by Mary and Bill Emig at the General John Montgomery Homestead.

Stop by between 3:00 and 5:00 PM to relax and recharge with tea, coffee, and holiday desserts in the calming atmosphere of this beautifully restored 18th-century home. In addition, you'll be able to pick up gift ideas for the book lovers on your list by browsing displays of titles that have been recommended by library staff, trustees, and friends.

Admission is by donation to benefit the Haverhill Corner Library, with a suggested donation of $8.00.

The Montgomery Homestead is located at the intersection of Routes 10 and 25 in Haverhill Corner.

Virginia Woolf Book Discussion

The library will host a discussion of Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf on Monday, December 12 at 7:00 PM. The event will be free and open to the public, and copies of the book are available to borrow in advance. This is the third and final event in our fall book discussion series, which has featured novels by British women.

Published in 1925, Mrs. Dalloway is one of Woolf's best-known novels. It explores British culture and society in the post-World War I era as it follows Clarissa Dalloway's travels about London on a day in June as she prepares for a party that she will give that evening. (The novel itself, and its effect on three women in different eras, play a central role in Michael Cunningham's contemporary novel The Hours.)

One of the most important writers of the Modernist movement, Woolf was a well-known literary figure during Britain's interwar period and one of the central members of a circle of writers, artists, and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. She is remembered for her novels, such as Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and Orlando, and for her book-length essay A Room of One's Own, a landmark of feminist writing. With her husband Leonard, she also established the Hogarth Press.

Like her fellow Modernist James Joyce, Woolf wrote a masterpiece set in a single city on a single day in June that nevertheless incorporates the history and social dynamics of its time and place. Her ability to refract an entire society through the consciousness of a single character is a remarkable achievement of empathy and creative imagination.

Jane Eyre Book Discussion

Join us Monday, November 14 at 7:00 PM for a discussion of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. This is the second in our fall book discussion series featuring novels by British women.

Published in 1847, Jane Eyre was an immediate success, and it continues to resonate for contemporary readers with its vivid portrait of a strong, complex female character and its story of her passionate love for Edward Rochester. Bronte offers a psychologically astute portrayal of a plain and poor young woman's growth from girlhood to adult, while commenting on the social conventions of the Victorian era and the limits placed on her character as a result of her sex and class.

The fall series will conclude on Monday, December 12 with a discussion of Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.

Book discussions are free and open to the public, and copies of the book are available to borrow from the library in advance.

Essay Writing Workshop

The library will offer a four-week workshop in "Writing the Personal Essay" beginning Tuesday, October 11. Sessions will be held at the library beginning at 7:00 PM. There is a $100 registration fee, all of which will go to benefit the library, and enrollment is limited to 10. No previous writing experience is required. The weekly sessions will be held:

Tuesday, October 11: Discovering your material
Tuesday, October 18: Observation and description
Tuesday, October 25: Organizing your thoughts
Tuesday, November 1: Polishing your presentation

Activities will include in-class and take-home exercises, reading and discussing one another's work, and analyzing examples of outstanding personal essays.

Book Sale!

The Haverhill Corner Library will hold its annual book sale on Saturday, September 10 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. As usual, the sale will be held on the lawn in front of the library, and all sales will be "by donation."

Our patrons have been very generous with book donations this year, so we will have a large selection of fiction, non-fiction, children's books, videos, and other materials. We will also have light refreshments available.

Book Club for Writers: Jackson and Le Guin

The library will hold its next Book Club for Writers event on Thursday, July 28 at 7:00 PM, when we will discuss "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula K. Le Guin. The program is free and open to the public, and copies of the stories are available at the library.

"The Lottery" and "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" are both relatively short stories that nevertheless have a powerful effect on readers, and our discussion will consider how they achieve such a concentrated impact. "The Lottery" is one of the best-known stories in American fiction, one that caused a sensation when published in The New Yorker in 1948; some readers cancelled their subscriptions to the magazine and sent hate mail to the author after it appeared. Le Guin says that "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" was inspired by a passage from the works of the philosopher William James; it won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story of 1973.

Book Club for Writers is a fiction discussion program that meets four times a year; the conversation particularly focuses on issues of craft and technique that will appeal to writers and aspiring writers, but the program is open to anyone who wishes to participate. The fall edition will be held on Thursday, October 27, when we will discuss "Some Other, Better Otto" by Deborah Eisenberg and "People Like That Are the Only People Here" by Lorrie Moore.

Shakespeare Book Discussion

Join us Wednesday, June 29 at 7:00 PM for a discussion of Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare by Stephen Greenblatt. This discussion will be free and open to the public, and will be the perfect introduction to the series of Shakespeare performances that Alumni Hall will host beginning the following week. On Wednesdays during July and early August, the Theatre Under the Stars troupe will perform on the lawn between Alumni Hall and the library.

Will in the World is a lively combination of biography, cultural history, and criticism by one of the foremost living scholars of Shakespeare. Greenblatt brilliantly fleshes out the known facts of Shakespeare's life with his encyclopedic knowledge of Elizabethan England and of the Bard's own works. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, Will in the World was named the best non-fiction book of the year by Time magazine.

Author Luncheon with John Walters

The library will hold an author luncheon featuring writer and broadcaster John Walters on Saturday, May 21 from noon to 2:00 at Alumni Hall.

Walters is the author of Roads Less Traveled: Visionary New England Lives, published last year by Plaidswede Press. Roads Less Traveled is a collection of portraits of extraordinary New Englanders, from artists, actors, and musicians to scientists, crafters, and activists. One of those profiled is Haverhill's own Betty Johnson.

Walters is also well known as the former host of "The Front Porch" on New Hampshire Public Radio.

The luncheon will feature asparagus and spring mix salad with vinaigrette, cold poached salmon with fresh herb aioli, marinated mushrooms, and new potato salad, and for dessert, orange crepe with strawberries and rhubarb, and vanilla ice cream.

The luncheon is a fund-raiser for the library. Tickets are $35 apiece or $60 for a pair. Call the library to reserve your ticket.

Book Club for Writers: Nabokov and Borges

The library will hold its third Book Club for Writers on Thursday, April 21 at 7:00 PM. The discussion will focus on stories by two twentieth-century masters: "Signs and Symbols" by Vladimir Nabokov and "The Library of Bable" by Jorge Luis Borges. The discussion is free and open to the public, and copies of the stories are available from the library.

Book Club for Writers examines classic and contemporary works of fiction with a focus on craft and technique that will particularly interest writers and aspiring writers. The program was created by the New Hampshire Writers' Project and is sponsored locally by a fiction writing group that meets weekly at the Haverhill Corner Library.

Huckleberry Finn Book Discussion

The library will sponsor a discussion of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain on Monday, April 18, at 7:00 PM. This is the fourth and final in a series of discussions of classic American fiction that the library has sponsored this winter. Published in 1885, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been one of the most popular, and one of the most controversial, novels ever published in America. Ernest Hemingway declared, "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called 'Huckleberry Finn' . . . It's the best book we've had." Yet when it was published, the public library in Concord, Massachusetts (home of the Transcendentalist Movement) banned the book, declaring it "the veriest trash," while during the 1990s, the American Library Association ranked it the fifth most frequently challenged book in the country. (In the first decade of the twenty-first century, it has slipped to number fourteen.) Come join the discussion and see what the fuss is about.

Third Annual Fiction Writing Workshop

Book Discussion: Daisy Miller

Join us Monday, March 21 at 7:00 PM for a discussion of DAISY MILLER by Henry James, part of our winter book discussion series. First published in 1878, DAISY MILLER was an immediate popular success and brought James his first fame as a writer. For a time, the eponymous heroine's name became a generic term for any young, flirtatious, American girl. The tale continues to be one of James's most enduringly popular works, in part because readers are often divided on the question: who bears responsibility for Daisy's plight -- she herself, or society? Come share your thoughts. Admission is free and open to the public.

The winter series in American classics will conclude April 18 with a discussion of ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN by Mark Twain.

Billy Budd Book Discussion

The library will sponsor a discussion of Billy Budd by Herman Melville on Monday, February 21, at 7:00 PM. The discussion will be free and open to the public. This is the second in a series of discussions of classic American novels scheduled this winter.

Not published until more than thirty years after Melville’s death, Billy Budd is today one of his best-known and most-discussed works. Melville’s tale of an innocent and guileless sailor caught in an unjust world wrestles with issues of guilt, justice, and the nature of truth. The book has been adapted for film, television, and perhaps most famously as an opera with music by Benjamin Britten and libretto by E. M. Forster and Eric Crozier.

Melville’s short novel is nevertheless thematically rich and an excellent example of the work of one of American’s greatest novelists. It’s sure to inspire a lively discussion.

The Haverhill Corner Library will sponsor book discussions featuring four American classics this winter. Discussions will be held at the library on the third Monday of the month and will begin at 7:00 PM. They are free and open to the public.

January 17: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

February 21: Billy Budd by Herman Melville

March 21: Daisy Miller by Henry James

April 18: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

The series begins with The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s tale of private sin and public condemnation in Puritan New England. Generally considered to be his greatest work, Hawthorne’s novel was an immediate success upon publication and has remained popular ever since. It is frequently adapted for the stage and screen or referenced in popular culture (such as in the 2010 film “Easy A”). The novelist and critic D. H. Lawrence declared it “profound and wonderful . . . the lasting representative book of American literature.”

Copies will be available to borrow from the library in advance.

If you’ve always meant to read some of these American classics, this discussion series is your chance to do so. Or if you read them in high school or college, it’s an opportunity to revisit some books that reward another look. We hope you’ll join us.

Story Discussions for Writers

The Haverhill Corner Library and the New Hampshire Writers’ Project will sponsor Book Club for Writers: Haverhill on Thursday, October 28 at 7:00 PM. Participants will gather at the library to discuss two classic short stories, “That Evening Sun” by William Faulkner and “The Dead” by James Joyce.

The discussion will focus on issues of writing craft that will be of interest to those who write fiction or who aspire to do so. Copies of the stories will be available at the library prior to the discussion.

Book Club for Writers is a program created by the Writers’ Project that has also been implemented in Portsmouth, Concord, Lebanon, and other parts of the state. The Haverhill edition will be organized by a fiction writing group that meets weekly at the library.

The library expects to host additional Book Club for Writers events on a quarterly basis.

Long before Dora the Explorer, Alice went to Wonderland, Dorothy visited Oz, and Wendy flew to Neverland. These classic works are not just beloved favorites, they are cultural touchstones and reference points, part of our common literary heritage. Perennially popular, these books have always appealed to adults as much as to children, and with each new generation of readers, they inspire new adaptations and re-imaginings (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is currently the second highest-grossing film of 2010).

The Haverhill Corner Library will revisit these classic children’s books in a discussion series that will consider them through the eyes of adult readers. At a time when cheerful domesticity was considered a woman’s highest calling, these books all featured girls experiencing adventure and overcoming adversities. At a time when the entire globe had finally been mapped, these books were set in fabulous lands. At a time when Anglo-American notions of class and hierarchy were at their most rigid, these novels offered alternative models of social organization.

But while these books may have light to shed both on their times and ours, the best reason to re-read these classic works is because they’re so much fun.

If you’ve not encountered them, these town discussion lists are a means of sharing news and announcements with your neighbors. Common topics include: requests for recommendations of plumbers, electricians, or other service providers; announcements of community news and events; yard sales; wildlife sightings; town governance issues; etc.

The Everything Nice Co. Library Fundraiser

The Everything Nice Co. is a partnership between Kelly Lewis (the art teacher) and Aimee Toth (a kindergarten teacher) at the Thetford Elementary School.

"Since teaching ourselves the needle felting technique it has been a literal ‘felting frenzy’ at our homes. We use local wool and that we hand-dye to create one of a kind pieces of artwork. What started small has grown and grown and we now offer backyard birds, whimsical birds and fish, barrettes, rubber bands, pins and a variety of jewelry."

Kelly is a resident of Haverhill and a big fan of the library so they thought a fundraiser would be a great way to get their name out there while helping support the local library! 20% of all proceeds will be donated to the library!

"We are having so much fun coming up with new designs and products…we hope you enjoy them as much as we love making them! We have to admit…some of our creations are hard for us to part with. "

Book Discussion Series Takes Up Motherless Brooklyn

The Haverhill Corner Library’s book discussion series “Are They Mysteries?” will continue Monday, April 19, with a discussion of Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem. Motherless Brooklyn won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.

The discussion will be held at the library at 7:00 PM and will be free and open to the public. Copies of the book are available to borrow from the library in advance of the discussion.

Motherless Brooklyn opens dramatically with a stakeout that leads to abduction and murder. Lionel Essrog, afflicted with Tourette syndrome and now bereft of the father-figure who had given structure and purpose to his life, resolves to investigate the death of his boss, Frank Minna. That investigation, propelled by Lionel’s compulsive behaviors and verbal tics, will take him from Brooklyn to Manhattan to the coast of Maine and back again.

Motherless Brooklyn was hailed by Esquire magazine as “the best novel of the year . . . utterly original and deeply moving,” while USA Today called it, “funny and sly, clever, compelling, and endearing.”

“Under the guise of a detective novel, Lethem has written a more piercing tale of investigation, one revealing how the mind drives on its own ‘wheels within wheels,’” said the New York Times; “Motherless Brooklyn immerses us in the mind’s dense thicket, a place where words split and twine in an ever-deepening tangle.”

Jonathan Lethem is the author of seven other novels, including The Fortress of Solitude and Chronic City, as well as of numerous stories and essays. He received a MacArthur Fellowship (aka “genius award”) in 2005. He lives in Brooklyn, New York and Maine.

The “Are They Mysteries?” discussion series features books by literary writers working in the crime or mystery genre. Meetings are held on the third Monday of the month through June, and the final two sessions will feature works by China Miéville and Thomas Pynchon.

Copies of all books are available to borrow from the Haverhill Corner Library thanks to support from the New Hampshire Humanities Council and the Woodsville Book Store.

“Are They Mysteries?” Book Discussion Series Continues

The Haverhill Corner Library’s book discussion series “Are They Mysteries?” will continue Monday, March 15, with a discussion of The Yiddish Policemen’s Union by Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon.

The discussion will be held at the library at 7:00 PM and will be free and open to the public. Copies of the book are available to borrow from the library in advance of the discussion.

Set in an alternative Alaska where Jewish refugees from Europe have flourished for sixty years in the Federal District of Sitka, the novel tells the story of Detective Meyer Landsman’s investigation of a murder committed in the hotel where he lives. The book has been hailed as “beautiful and breakneck” (Washington Post Book World), featuring “one of the most appealing detective heroes to come along since Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe” (New York Times). “The pure reach and music and weight of Chabon’s imagination are extraordinary, born of brilliant ambition you don't even notice because it is so deeply entertaining” (Washington Post Book World).

Michael Chabon won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, while The Yiddish Policemen’s Union won both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, and was a finalist for the Edgar Allan Poe Award. Chabon’s other novels include The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Wonder Boys, The Final Solution, and Gentlemen of the Road. His most recent book is a collection of essays, Manhood for Amateurs.

The “Are They Mysteries?” discussion series features books by literary writers working in the crime or mystery genre. Meetings are held on the third Monday of the month through June, and future sessions will feature works by Jonathan Lethem, China Miéville, and Thomas Pynchon.

Copies of all books are available to borrow from the Haverhill Corner Library thanks to support from the New Hampshire Humanities Council and the Woodsville Book Store.

The library will host a six-title book discussion series beginning in January:

Are They Mysteries?

At least since Edmund Wilson asked, “Who Cares Who Killed Roger Ackroyd?,” debate has raged over the literary merits of mystery fiction. In recent years, however, some writers of acknowledged literary aspirations and accomplishments have unapologetically adopted not only the subject matter of crime novels (murder and vice have never been entirely absent from literary novels), but even the forms and tropes of the genre. This book discussion series will consider six such works by critically acclaimed writers. Will fiction lovers who don’t care for mysteries be repulsed by the tawdry trappings of the crime novel? Will mystery fans find the satisfaction in these works that they expect from more representative examples of the genre? To explore these questions, we will read:

Monday, January 18: Christine Falls by Benjamin Black, aka Booker Prize-winner John Banville

Monday, February 15: Theft by two-time Booker Prize-winner Peter Carey

Monday, March 15: The Yiddish Policemen’s Union by Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Chabon

Monday, April 19: Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction

Monday, May 17: The City & the City by New York Times bestseller China Miéville

Monday, June 21: Inherent Vice by National Book Award-winner Thomas Pynchon

Discussions will be held on the third Monday of the month at the Haverhill Corner Library and will be free and open to the public.

Fiction Writing Workshop

Beginning September 24, the Haverhill Corner Library will sponsor a six-week fiction writing workshop. Sessions will be held on Thursdays from 7:00 – 8:30 PM at the library. In each session, we will examine a writing topic and we will discuss work submitted by participants.

Registration $125; limit 10 participants.

Thursday, September 24: The Big Picture
Narrative; synopsis; reading & writing; novels & stories; genres; generating ideas; writing habits.

Thursday, October 1: Voice
First person; third person limited; third person omniscient; strengths and limitations of each.

Thursday, October 8: Character and Dialogue
Creating and revealing character; establishing character with dialogue; advancing the story with dialogue.

Thursday, October 15: Plot
To outline or not to outline?; building daramtic tension; pacing.

Thursday, October 22: Editing and Rewriting
Sentences and their use; editing yourself; starting over.

Thursday, October 29: Publishing & the Writing Life
What do with your work when it’s finished.

Registration fees will benefit the Haverhill Corner Library.

About the instructor: John Landrigan worked for seventeen years in book publishing as an acquisitions editor and marketer, editing both fiction and non-fiction. He is coauthor of three novels and a trustee of the New Hampshire Writers’ Project.

Author Luncheon

On Sunday, September 27, from noon to 3:00 PM, the Haverhill Corner Library will host a luncheon with mystery writer Sarah Stewart Taylor, author of four novels featuring art historian and amateur sleuth Sweeney St. George. The luncheon will be held at the Gibson House Bed & Breakfast on the Green in Haverhill. Chef Ted Schiffman will prepare a buffet menu including pecan-crusted chicken breast, salmon baked in rösti, roast tenderloins of beef, and southwestern shrimp cocktail. Tickets are $50 per person or two for $85, to benefit the library, with a maximum attendance of 40. Copies of Taylor’s books—O’ Artful Death, Mansions of the Dead, Judgment of the Grave, and Still as Death—will be available to borrow from the library and for sale at the Woodsville Book Store in advance of the event. Books will also be sold at the luncheon, courtesy of the Woodsville Book Store, and the author will sign copies. Tickets will be sold in advance; to purchase, stop by the library or speak to a library trustee.

Goals for 2008

1. Log our collection into NHU-Pac of the New Hampshire State Library to facilitate ILL (Interlibrary Loan).
2. Increase library hours open for patrons by adding Thursday 4-7P.M. to our schedule. (Combined open hours will be 15 hours a week, a 20% increase in our open time.)
3. Work on Fire Safety Code issues within our facility.

Russian Stacking Dolls Workshop

Storytime at the Conklin Farm

Culminating activity showcasing the 2007 Summer Reading Program, the Libri Foundation Grant and the CLiF Grant. Twenty-five children and adults walked to the Conklin's Jalco Farm. Miles read to the children who sat around on bails of hay. The children toured the barn and were up close with a calf. Ice cream and goodies were served. A Grand Adventure for all!

*Joie-de-vivre! We were awarded a grant for 40 new children's books from The Libri Foundation! This exciting award has added new books to our children's collection. The infusion of new and classic literature is invaluable for our small library. A special thanks goes to Barbara McKillip and the Libri Foundation for offering libraries this opportunity.

Here you see one of the books being share with our pre-school readers. We were all enjoying the fall weather, reading under the trees on our front lawn.
